Mattes, age 64, of Thorp, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at his home.  Funeral services were held on Monday, August 15, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Thorp.  Rev. Daniel Welch officiated and inurnment followed in Sylvan Cemetery, rural Thorp. Visitation was held on Monday, August 15, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.

Donald Allen Mattes was born on March 11, 1947, in Stanley, WI, to Philip K. and Elmira (Kuester) Mattes.  He received his education at Area schools and graduated from Thorp High School in 1965.  Donnie later attended Business School in Milwaukee.  After completing his education, Donnie returned to Thorp, and was employed as an accountant at the Mattes Livestock Market until its closure.  Additionally, Donnie was a bartender at the Silver Dollar for over fifty (forty?) years.  His unique laughter could be heard throughout the bar as he told his customers the joke of the day!

In his spare time, Donnie had many interests, but he especially enjoyed playing cards, playing cribbage, occasionally going to the casino, and attending the livestock sales at Turenne Livestock Market.

He was a member of the Thorp Moose Lodge and also was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Donnie is survived by his mother, Elmira Mattes of Thorp; one brother, Philip O. (Diane) Mattes of Thorp; one sister, Jean (Daniel) Winger of Cadott; one sister-in-law, MaryBeth Mattes of Wind Lake, WI; four nieces: Michele (Richard) Price, Laura (Tom) Schleicher, Marsha Mattes, and Michelle Mattes; four nephews: Paul Winger, Mark Mattes, Martin Mattes, and Michael Mattes; two grandnieces: Victoria (Jeff) Flashinski and Alexandra Price; and one grand-nephew, Nathan Price; other relatives and  many friends.
