Clark County Board Doings (25 November 1910)
The County board adjourned at 11 a.m. Saturday with the gavel in the hands of the newly elected chairman John Verkuilen of the Town of Worden. Mr. Verkuilen received a majority of votes on the informal ballot and this being declared formal by ayes and nays was declared elected. The retiring chairman, Geo Ure was not given leave until he had been presented with a handsome leather rocker and smoking set by members of the board as a token of their regard for him. George has handled the gavel for three years very successfully and only his duties elsewhere hindered his good chances for the fourth year.
Dist. Atty. Crosby was also not allowed to retire without a good seat, and a second chair was purchased and presented him, also a fine smoking set. Both gentlemen were greatly pleased and met the board with short speeches of thanks.
The contest for janitor of the court house was quite spirited. Aside from the long waiting candidates a "dark horse" came up at the last moment in the person of J. W. Short, supervisor of the Town of Levis. He was elected unanimously but failed upon general qualifications not being able to turn the required hand springs, and was dismissed. Later it was found that Mr. Short did not care much for the job after all. Chairman Ritchie of the Town of Hewett missed a fur coat and J. W. evidently had become so excited over his impending election that he had walked away with it. Mr. Short has always had an excellent reputation, so all charges against him were dismissed without delay. The real election of janitor resulted in the election of Louis Handke of Court Street for the place. Mr. Handke will make a good efficient janitor. - Republican and Press
