Williams, George, Sr. (13 December 1826 - 11 March 1911)

Geo Williams Sr. dead; there passed away at 4:15 o’clock last Friday afternoon at the ripe old age of 84 years, a well known Clark County pioneer who had much to do with the hewing out and building of this town. 

Deceased was born Dec. 13, 1826 in Ontario County, N. Y.  When 10 years of age he came with his parents to Waukesha County, Wis. and at Oconomowoc, 59 years ago the 27^th of last January he was married to Miss Mary Morse. They in company with the Levi Marsh family and that of Tom Wage’s parents came here across country from Sparta by ox team, hewing out their road as they came in the spring of 1856.  Mr. Williams settling in Section 1 and continuing to live in that same section though from time to time changing to different parts of it until the time of his death; a quiet unassuming man.  A man of deeds rather than of words; his ability and sterling qualities were rapidly recognized and the large crowd attending his funeral mutely bespoke the esteem in which he was held. The widow and six children survive him; Amy, Mrs. Wm. Frank of Vancouver, B. C., Jennie, Mrs. Alex Cattanach of Town of Lynn, Henry E. of Acton, Mont., Mrs. Amelia Converse, Willis and Lina, Mrs. Oscar Doughty of this place.

The funeral was held from the opera house Sunday afternoon, Rev. Mallory of Stevens Point officiating. The interment was made in the Windfall Cemetery beside the body of his son George who died when 12 years of age.  The deceased came to his death by paralysis. This stroke was the sixth, and the saddest part of it is that his beloved widow was at that time and still continues to be very ill.

Their daughter, Mrs. Oscar Doughty has since their decline several years ago, taken up her home with them, and with her husband been to this aged worthy pair all that loving children could be.

The pallbearers were Irvine Brooks, Henry and Ernest Sternitzky, Tom Wage, Wm. Schlinsog and John Ure.
