Cyril "Cy" Buker, 93, Greenwood, died on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at the Marshfield Care Ceneter. Private family services will be held.
Cyril Owen Buker was born on Feb. 5, 1918, in Greenwood, the son of Arthur and Mae (LeGault) Buker. He was raised and received his education in Greenwood, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1936 as an accomplished student and athlete. He then attended UW-Madison, where he played baseball and earned a bachelor of science degree in 1940. He married Harriet Marie Jindra on April 26, 1941. After graduating from college, he had a career playing baseball that spanned from 1940-52 that included playing with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League, in 1945. Throughout his teaching career, he mainly taught physical education and science and coached football, basketball, baseball and volleyball. The schools where he taught included Sturgeon Bay, Shullsburg, Memorial High School in Eau Claire, Greenwood, Whitehall, Loyal, Black River Falls and Rib Lake. He also owned the Parkway Bar, in Greenwood, for a few years. After retiring from teaching in 1970, he started his own body repair and painting business in Greenwood, which he operated until he was 88 years old. He was inducted into the Wisconsin High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame and the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.
Survivors include seven children, Bonnie Buker, Marshfield, Connie (David) Sochan, Marshfield, Lee (Karen) Buker, New Berlin, Pat (Barbara) Buker, Chippewa Falls, Bob Buker, Marathon City, Tom (Marcia) Buker, Antigo, and Judy (Mike) Dreikosen, Wausau; four grandchildren, Joshua Dreikosen, Mark Buker, Craig Buker and Lee Sochan; two great-grandchildren, Alexa and Benjamin Sochan; a brother-in-law, Vernon Mech, Greenwood; one niece, Vicki (RichardR Mech-Hester, Indianapolis; one nephew, Michael (Tina) Mech, St. Paul, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriet, on Feb. 28, 2008; and one sister, Elaine Mech, on July 11, 2003.
