East Lynn (5 May 1910)

Emil Lindow and family attended the silver wedding at Phillip Breseman’s last Thursday night.

A large number of neighbors and friends called at he home of Henry Retzlaff Monday evening and spent a few hours in the old customary style.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Neinas and daughter Lydia of Granton and Mr. and Mrs. W. Neinas and daughter, Clara of Sauerkraut City were guests at W. Guk’s Sunday.

Among those who are somewhat under the weather are C. Guk and H. Dietrich.

A very remarkable thing happened one day last week when Albert Sternitzky sent his trustworthy son to his home place to get a load of hay.  It seems that while Louis was loading the hay he charmed an old hen at the same time. And when he got ready to start on his return journey the hen who has hatched at least 24 broods of chickens and is something of a mother noticed the lonesome looks of her charmer and the side glance she gave him said as plain as words, ‘it is not well that thou art alone, I will keep you company’.  So unbeknown to Louis she flew onto the load of hay and while he drove gaily along thinking of all the pretty girls in the United States his companion laid an egg, and when 2 miles from their destination she became frightened and took for the woods.  John Mercer, Albert’s man of all works was promptly notified and put on her trail, but at present writing he has not yet overtaken her.
