Fijalkiewicz, George (Barn Fire - 5 MAR 1959)
Fire of unknown origin destroyed a barn and silo on the farm of George Fijalkiewicz, a mile northwest of Greenwood, early Thursday morning.
The fire was discovered in the peak of the roof by the owner when he was awakened about 5:15 a.m. Before the Greenwood Fired Department could respond to a call for assistance, the flames were out of control. Wind from the east kept the blaze from spreading to other farm buildings.
The Fijalkiewicz’s raise chickens and the destroyed barn was used as a brooder house. Four brooders had been put into operation to protect 1,500 baby chicks scheduled for delivery to the farm today.
All of the equipment in the barn was destroyed by flames.
No estimate of the loss was available, but the owner said it was partly covered by insurance.
