Chili (2 June 1910)

The Memorial Day has passed away like everything else will.  Here in Chili it was a day which will be remembered a long time.  The day was cool, a little threatening, in fact it rained a bit in the early morning.  Nevertheless the program of the day was carried out in full.  The parade to the burial ground started promptly at 10 a.m., the old soldiers leading in a wagon, the band next, the school children of Chili and Dankemyer School and a good many rigs in the order named.  The usual way of decorating the graves with band music was carried out, then home. The program in the hall commenced about 1:45 p.m.  Mr. Hallock gave the opening prayer and Mr. Hungerford delivered the oration.  He spoke short but quite to the point.  After him the children, choir and band did their share.  A good deal of credit has to be given to the children and still more to the teachers who took so many pains in instructing the children.  Everything was appreciated very much.

The business men’s association has decided to have a 4th of July celebration. The program for same shall be known very shortly.  It is assured that it will be made interesting for all who want to come and celebrate here.

Mr. Hart from Nasonville the old blind veteran took in the Memorial Day exercises and played the fife while Mr. E. A. Webster played the drum.

A sister and a niece of Mrs. A. Martens from Texas came here last week to visit for a time with Mr. and Mrs. A. Martens.

It is said that Mr. Hefty our butcher has engaged part of the Galloway house.

Otto Kampin has been working for Otto Sampe making cheese.

Watch for the program of the 4th of July celebration.
