Raymond M. Degenhardt, 68, Marshfield, formerly of Loyal, died on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, after a a courageous battle with kidney and heart disease. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Loyal. Rev. William Felix officiated and burial followed in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Degenhardt, Denis Degenhardt, Ron Rizzi, Jerry Rosier, Mark Derfus and Terry Bohman.
Raymond Michael Degenhardt was born on Aug. 28, 1943, in Loyal, the son of Henry and Laverne (nee Ryan) Degenhardt. He was raised on the family farm and received his education in area schools. After completing his education, he served in the U,S. Army from Nov. 8, 1961, until receiving a hardship discharge on Oct. 22, 1962, and returning home to take care of his ailing mother. After his mother’s death, he enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard. He married Elaine Schultz on June 5, 1965, at Zion Lutheran Church, Colby. They lived in Unity and he worked as a farmhand until moving to Dorchester. In 1967, he went to work for Northern Freeport Silo Company,Owen, and was employed there until 1976. He then moved to Loyal, where he was employed at Loyal Cold Storage and hen later with Colby Cheese Factory, Colby. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and was a member of the church choir.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Elaine, Marshfield; one daughter, Tabitha (Bart) Forman, Marshfield; one brother, Ron (Helena) Degenhardt, Rockford, Ill.; four sisters-in-law, Betty Degenhardt, Greenwood, Mary Anne Degenhardt, Dillsboro, Ind., Christine (Kenneth) Derfus, Unity, and Marilyn (Terry) Skarda, The Villages, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, Leo Verbrigghe, Janesville, and Dennis (Mary) Schultz, Bemidiji, Minn., special friend, Dan Oelrich; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Annette Degenhardt, on Sept. 21, 1999, a son-in-law, Chris Salzman, on May 14, 1996; five brothers, Edwin, Harold, Roman, Allen and James Degenhardt; three sisters, Elnora Bowman, Jean Verbrigghe and Carol Whipple; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Claypool.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to the Kidney Foundation, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, or Saint Joseph’s Hospital Palliative Care.
