Smaldone, Frank (24 July 1890 - 14 September 1963)

 

Frank Smaldone, 73, Greenwood, died at his home September 14, 1963.  He had been ill with a heart ailment for about four years.

 

Mr. Smaldone, son of Francisco and Mary E. Smaldone, was born July 24, 1890, in Troy, N. Y., where he received his education and where he lived until he entered the service in 1914.  He received his discharge in 1917.  On August 16, 1919, he was married to Margaret McNeil in Columbus, Ga.  After their marriage the Smaldones came to Reeve, Wis., where they farmed until 1924, when they came to Clark County, settling on a farm east of Greenwood. They lived there until they moved onto a farm a mile west of Greenwood.  In 1948 they retired and moved into the city.

 

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Mathew (Lois) Nowosel of Glenview, Ill., and Miss Mary Smaldone of Maywood, Ill.; and a brother, Anthony Smaldone of Ilion, N. Y.

 

Funeral services were held September 19, from the Hill Funeral Home in Greenwood. Military rites were held by the Wallis-Hinker Legion Post, No. 238, of which he was adjutant for many years. The Rev. David Kellin, pastor of Grace Methodist Church officiated.  Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.

 

Honorary pallbearers were veterans of World War I: Harry Gordee, Fred Behrens, Harry Stafford, Alfred Schwarze, Fred Decker, Calvin Frantz, David Thwing and John Kelty.  Active pallbearers were: Cletus Susa, LeRoy Fravert, John F. Trunkel, Mike Klapatauskas, Gordon Christopherson and John Kelty.

 

Mrs. David Kellin sang, "Beyond the Sunset" and "Whispering Hope," accompanied by Mrs. Daniel Olson at the organ.

 

People from away who attended were: Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Nowosel of Glenview, Ill.; Miss Mary Smaldone of Maywood, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Truman Yeomans, Mrs. Norman Van Blaricom and Mrs. Marion Blaricom, all of St. Paul; and Victor Blaricom of Reeve, Wis.
