Mengel, John (1908 - 31 JAN 1961)
A car-truck crash nine miles north of Medford about 5:00 p.m. Tuesday claimed the life of a former Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) man, John Mengel, 53, now of Ogema.
Mengel’s death was instant as he suffered a broken neck when thrown from his pickup truck after it collided with a car driven by Carl Stanke, 20, of Ashland.
Stanke is being treated at Medford Hospital for an injury to his knee and facial cuts.
Both men were alone in their respective vehicles.
According to reports the mishap occurred when Mengel apparently lost control of his vehicle on the slippery highway while going uphill. It skidded sideways into the path of Stanke’s car.
Mengel and his family live in the Owen and Withee communities for several years prior to moving to Ogema nine years ago, when he purchased a hotel in that village after leaving his farm southwest of Withee.
His mother, Mrs. John Mengel, a sister, Mrs. John (Isabelle) Lukowicz, and a brother, Orville, live in Owen. Other survivors are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Dick (Dorothy) Jorgenson and Mrs. Ken (Jeanette) Schroder, both of Milwaukee, and four granddaughters.
Funeral arrangements were still indefinite last Wednesday evening but it is believed that services will be held at the Lutheran Church in Ogema, after which his remains will be brought here for burial at Riverside Cemetery alongside of a son who preceded him in death. Friends may call the Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Home, Owen, for more particulars.
