Herrick Service Station-Greenwood (Fire –1964)

A fire destroyed the center wall in the Herrick service station, on North Main Street Sunday at approximately 4:30 p.m.  A stranger passing through the city saw the fire and reported it to Jeffrey Herrick, 17 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herrick, who was on duty.

Jeffrey put in a call to the Greenwood Fire Department and then went to work to put the fire out, in the attic of the frame building, using three fire extinguishers and water.

No cause for the fire had been determined. There had been no fire in the wood and coal stove, used to heat the building since 5 p.m. Saturday.

There was approximately $500 damage to the wall and stock by fire, smoke and water in the station and cabinet shop.
