Streckert’s Factory Badly Damaged by Fire Today
At 3:25 this morning the fire siren was sounded in response to a call from E. H. Streckert. It took considerable blowing before the realization of the sound registered. The sight of the red sky and flames shooting upward and another alarm and there was plenty of action in the early morning hour as firemen and spectators in cars or walking went to the fire at the box factory.
Streams of water were played on the burning piles of lumber and the fire was confined to the kiln and engine room and back part of the shop.
It took several hours of hard work to get the fire under control, but most of the firemen were able to get home in time for a change from their soaking wet clothes and have breakfast before going to work.
A light covering of snow on roofs of neighboring houses helped prevent spread of the flames.
There is some insurance on the building and the contents but the extent of the damage is not yet known.
