Library Contract to Withee Construction Co. (2 August 1914)
Preliminary Work Started and Building Will Be Rushed
Last Saturday Geo. Awsum of Chicago, the architect for the new library board, opened the bids for the work. The three lowest bids were as follows:
Withee Construction Co. . . . . . $9200
Krasin Bros. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9980
James McGillvray . . . . . . . . . . . 9654
The Withee Construction Co., being the lowest bidder, was awarded the contract after several deductions were made through some minor changes in the building. The final general contract price was $8400.
W.E. Poate was awarded the contract for plumbing and heating.
Mr. Madsen, who represented the Withee concern, immediately ordered material for the preliminary work and will push the work as rapidly as possible. The work of excavating the basement will start this week so that the walls may be laid some time next week.
The basement walls will be on concrete and the outside brick will be Oriental tapestry, a brick which will make a very beautiful building. The roof will be of red tile and the heating will be hot water. The building will be 30x60 feet and face on Hewett street.
