Brossow, Duane (1956? - 25 OCT 1961)

Duane Brossow, age 5, son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Brossow of Seward Alaska, died on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 1961, from burns received in an accident the day before.  Duane and his friend, Mark Todd, were playing in an abandoned building in back of the Todd home.  Finding som inflammable liquid in a can with which he was played, he spilled it on his clothes.  Later he built a fir in the building which immediately caught onto his clothes.  Mark ran into his home to call his mother for help.  She tried stamping out the fire with her hands when Duane ran out of the building aflame, at which time she received some serious burns on her hands.  At that time a man walking by came to help and wrapped his coat around the boy, smothering the flames.

Duane was taken to the hospital and passed away at 2:30 the following day with burns over 80% of his body.

The Fred Brossows are former residents of Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), where Fred will be remembered for working for the Altenburg Auto Co.  They moved to Alaska 10 years ago where Fred is engaged in crab fishing.  Leaving to mourn his death are his parents, three brothers at home and one in the Navy; his grandfather, John Brossow, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brossow, an aunt and uncle of Withee.
