At a candlelight ceremony at 4:00 in the afternoon, Miss Joan Ardys Grimes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shurleigh Grimes, Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), was escorted to the altar on the arm of her father and given in marriage to Gene Charles Altenburg, son of Mrs. Hazel Altenburg of Portland, Oregon, and the late Allen C. Altenburg. The nuptial vows were exchanged at the First Congregational Church in Owen on Saturday, Nov. 24th, 1961, with the Rev. Ralph Claybaugh officiating at the ceremony. The church was beautifully decorated with white and gold chrysanthemums and the large crowd of guests filled the churh witnessing the ceremony.
During the ceremony Mr. John Butler of Hector, Minn., accompanied by Mrs. Duane Moschek at the organ, sang "The Wedding Prayer" and "The Lord’s Prayer."
The bride wore a gown of satin with a chapel length train. The bodice trimmed with alencon lace applique had three-quarter length sleeves, and the bell-shaped princess skirt had a sash in the back. Wearing a crown of pearls and Austrian crystal flowers, to which an elbow length veil of silk illusion adorned the bride. She carried a cascade bouquet of white and gold carnations which was centered by a white orchid from which hung streamers with stephanotis.
Maid of honor was Miss Jane Grimes, sister of the bride, and bridesmaids were Miss Kathryn Cullen of Waverly, Minn., and Miss Kathleen Thorson of Owen. They wore street length dresses of moss green velvet with scoop neckline, short sleeves and a bell shaped skirt featuring a satin cummerbund at the waist and satin bow and streamers hanging from the back neckline. Their colonial bouquets were made of white bronze chrysanthemums.
Attending the groom were James Altenburg, brother of the groom from Coral Gables, Florida, as best man, and Mrs. Dick Hoffman of Rochester, Minn., and Mr. Dick Hughes of Owen. Ushers were Tom Parish of Virginia, Minn., Duane Haselow of Owen.
A bridal lunceion preceded the wedding at the home of the bride’s parents. Following the ceremony a reception was held for about 200 guests in the church dining room.
The bride is a student attending the the University of Minnesota studying to be an X-ray technician. The groom graduated from the University of Minnesota last June, receiving his degree in economics and now is taking an additional year to receive his degree in business administration. He is affiliated with Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
The newlyweds will make their home in Minneapolis and a delayed wedding trip is planned for Christmas vacation to points on the West Coast.
