Chili (8 September 1911)
It was a sad day for August Kempin and his family when he drove to Granton Friday morning with his son Willie. He was driving across the railroad track, thinking the passenger train due here at 10:58 a.m. had passed, when his horse and wagon were struck by the train, throwing and wounding him, killing his son, throwing the boy about 100 feet up the bank of the railroad, killing his horse and demolishing the wagon. The train stopped immediately, backed up to the crossing and took August to Neillsville where his wounds were dressed and brought him back on the 2 p.m. train. He was shaken up quite severely and is laid up for some time. The boy was picked up an tenderly carried home to his sorrowing mother. The remains were laid to rest in the Fremont Cemetery Sunday afternoon. A large sympathizing crowd of relatives, neighbors and friends attended the funeral. August Kempin seems to be getting along very well considering his injuries.
A coroners jury including the district attorney and the sheriff looked over the premises at Yolo where the accident occurred, on Friday and again on Saturday.
Stoves, ranges, heaters, a large selection at Degener’s
Mrs. Pierce and Miss Leishe visited with Mr. and Mrs. Degener Wednesday.
School at Chili commenced Monday with Miss Vera Beeckler at the desk for the fall term.
August Prust bought the farm of Ed Lemers. The latter bought a farm near his old home around Appleton. We are sorry to lose Ed as he is a pretty good neighbor.
If you want one of the best stave silos made, the Vesper open door silo, go to Degener. He sells them.
John Henning is having a concrete silo built. It is almost done.
H. Koser and L. A. Reichert were Granton business callers last Monday.
