Wehrmann, Alvin (Military: 1942 - 1945)
Uncle Alvin, the son of Otto and Elizabeth (Zell) Wehrmann, born in the Town of Warner, Clark Co.
In a portion of a letter he wrote in 1996 regarding his service, he wrote: (edited to some irreverent to his service)
"I was drafted into the service on Mar.3, 1942, discharged Oct. 10, 1945. Left New York on Sept. 27, 1942, landed in England on Oct. 3, 1942. Went to Africa, then India. We had no calendars or maps so don't know the dates.
We left Bombay on Jan. 31, 1945, went around the bottom of Australia and landed at San Pedro, Calif., Mar. 1, 1945, on board the ship USS George M. Randal(sp?). Was home on furlough the 8th of March for 21 days. Albert(brother) went back with me as far as Chicago. Alma(sister) was in Chicago then.... I spent $100 to get a fast train to Calif. 42 hours and I was in Los Angeles. Back to the job where you keep your mouth shut and ears open, like jury duty!"
Uncle. Alvin was a church member all his life.
