King, Horace G. (28 FEB 1859 - 1 MAY 1908)

(From May 2, 1908 Daily Press, Wallace, Idaho)

The death of Horace G. King in the Providence Hospital yesterday morning marks the passing of another of the pioneers of Coeur d ‘Alene and one of the grand men of the district.  Quiet and retiring and yet one who ever held the true interests of Wallace at heart, whose work was not blazed from the house tops, but was none the less effective on that account, in the death of Mr. King, Wallace has lost one of her best citizens.

Born in Neillsville, Wis., Feb. 28, 1859, Mr. King was 49 years of age.  He was educated in southern Wisconsin, and on leaving college took up the work of telegraphy, a calling which he followed almost without cessation until he came to Coeur d’Alene.  In 1886 he came to Wallace, where he immediately opened a general merchandise store in partnership with Henry K. Howes.  This was the first store ever opened in this town and occupied the same site as that on which it is located today.

Mr. King has always been a man of quiet and retiring disposition and at all times shunned public office.  Nevertheless he was a member of one of the first boards of trustees to serve in Wallace when the town was composed of but little more than a few cabins.

His favorite hobby was outdoor sports of all sorts, and he was never so happy as when out in the open mountain air, armed with either rod or gun.  Mr. King was heavily interesting in mining.  He was also among the first to file on land at Twin Falls after the irrigation scheme there had been completed.

He was a member of the Masons and the Woodmen of the World.  The funeral will take place from the house and will be private for the family.  After the service the body will be taken in charge by the Masons and interred according to the rites of that order.
