Taking Life Easy by Helen Baer (4th Grade)
Once there lived an old man and his wife in an old log house. They would go out on the porch and hear the swallows singing in the trees. The wife had never seen her granddaughter, and she wished very much to see her. One day the old man went downtown to get the mail, but he very seldom got a letter. But to his surprise there was really a letter for him. He hurried home before he opened it. His wife, whose name was Mary, took it from his pocket. She said "John, John, your granddaughter with her two little twins girls are coming for our Thanksgiving turkey." "Hurrah Hurrah" he shouted and went to meet them. They came in a buggy because there were no autoes in the country then. The old lady embraced them all. She told them how she would like to have them stay with her husband and her all their life time. Her granddaughter talked it over with her husband, and he said yes, so they stayed until they died and the little girls named Louis and Hilda were very good to their grandma and grandpa.
