There are a number of new teachers on the force this year.
Mr. Stevenson, who has the work in Science, is a graduate of the La Crosse Normal and for the past two years has been principal of the Holmen, Wisconsin, High School. As soon as he finds a suitable location, Mr. Stevenson will be joined by his wife and little daughter.
Mr. Crandall has just received his degree from Milton College in which institution he has taken a prominent part in their athletic activities, being a member of the strong basketball and baseball teams which this college has maintained for the past few years. During the summer he has pitched for the Janesville team, and although meeting some of the strongest teams of Wisconsin and Illinois, he has lost but one game during the season.
Miss Frisby, of Appleton, has had [portion of article missing]
Miss MacDonald, who has been teaching at Washburn, will have charge of the special work for the backward children, will act as substitute teacher and librarian for the school.
Mr. Bartels, who is a graduate of the La Crosse Normal and has been Principal of the West Lima schools, has been prominent in the athletic activities of La Crosse. Mrs. Bartels has been pitching for the Mainstee (Michigan) League Team during the summer and has just closed a most successful season.
Miss Seif is a graduate of the Stevens Point Normal and during the past year has been teaching in the Medford schools.
During the summer many new and needed improvements have been made in and about the buildings. At the north side building new cement walks have been laid and the roof repaired. The walk along the north side of the high school building has been taken up, the grading changed, and a new walk laid. The water no longer runs under the foundation of the building. The old material was used to run a new walk along the west side of the building and steps from the southwest corner to the street. The unsatisfactory condition in the south side grade building has been changed by tearing out the old fixtures and installing modern toilets and lavatories. The basement rooms are better lighted, enlarged and sanitary. The outside entrances have been taken away and inside ones built. These improvements were badly needed and will make much better working conditions. The pressing need for more room in the Manual Training and Domestic Departments has resulted in giving another room to each of these departments. The crowded conditions will be somewhat relieved when the City Library is moved to its new quarters.
A change has been made in the time of beginning the afternoon session. Hereafter both high school and grades will begin at 1:15 in the afternoon, giving the children one hour and fifteen minutes for the noon hour.
Some changes for raising the standard of high school work have been made, among which is the raising of the required units for graduation from 15 ½ to 16. Credit will be given for Retoricals and Calisthenics.
Isadora Forman, Jean Davis and Pearl Berg of last year’s graduating class are taking postgraduate work in the Teachers’ Training Course.
[portion of article missing] plays in but ten cities in Wisconsin this season and Neillsville is fortunate in being one of the ten. Every member of the orchestra is a soloist, and music lovers are assured of the greatest treat they ever had. Season tickets for the lecture course are now on sale.
