Schulist, David A. #2 (1946? - 7 JUL 1963)
David Allen Schulist, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schulist, rt. 3, Neillsville, drowned shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Black River, about a mile south of Neillsville.
David and his brother Daniel, 18, and two Zickert youths, Ricky, 13, and Terry, 15, were swimming together in an area known as Ross’ Eddy. The river at that point is about 70 feet wide and the youths had crossed to the southwest shore and were swimming back to the starting shore when Davis shouted for help.
Ricky Zickert, swimming near David, told authorities he tried to reach the drowning youth. His companions tossed a rubber ball to Ricky, hoping it would help as a life preserver, but the ball slipped from Ricky’s frasp. As David sank in the water he grabbed Ricky’s ankle, "then seemed to stiffen and let go."
Clark County authorities located the body about 6:00 p.m. in 14 feet of water near the point where the drowning had occurred.
