Baum, Elmer A. (Promoted to Chief Yeoman - 1963)
A Withee sailor was promoted to the rank of Chief Yeoman in the U.S. Navy during ceremonies at the St. Louis Navy Recruiting Station.
Chief Yeoman Elmer A. Baum, husband of the former Beverly Pyatt of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), and son of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Baum of Withee, was promoted as a result of a fleet-wide examination taken in February of this year.
A 16-year veteran, Chief Baum enlisted in the Navy in January 1948, after graduating from Withee High School. After service on many different Navy ships and stations. Chief Baum reported to the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, St. Louis, Mo., in September of 1961, after completion a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy’s Cargo Handling Battalion No. 1 at Williamsburg, Va.
Chief and Mrs. Baum reside at 809 North 88th St., East St. Louis, Ill., with their three children, Jean 11, Debra 9, Jon 5.
