Columbia "Winds" (27 May 1965)

Winds of tornadic velocity cut a swath through the sparsely populated Columbia area, southwest of Neillsville, about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to a report from William Schulz, a resident of the area.

No dwelling place was struck, but electric utility lines were downed as the winds cut a path from southwest to northeast, crossing between the Schulz place and those of Edward Urban and Ward Lockman. The winds crossed the Columbia road between the William Reider trailer house and the John Putz farm, north of John Sollberger’s.

Whether it might have been a small tornado which touched down for a short distance, or a flat wind of high velocity, was not known.

"It sounded like a diesel train going through," said Schulz.

The U. S. Weather bureau at Milwaukee said that three tornado cones were spotted on their radar "in the Eau Claire area."
