Next Sunday, the Rev. Norbert E. King, pastor of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and dean of the Clark-Jackson Deanery will observe the twenty-fifth anniversary of his ordination with a 11 o’clock High Mass of Thanksgiving.
The actual anniversary date was June 5. Fr. King has been pastor here since 1950.
Following the Mass, members of St. Mary’s Altar Society will serve a dinner for relatives, visiting clergy and friends. A reception to which the public is invited will be held in the parish hall from 3 to 5 p.m.
The Rev. Nicholas Beschta, Holy Cross parish, LaCrosse, a class-mate, will serve as deacon of the Mass and the Rev. Hugo Diers, Colby, will be subdeacon. The Rev. Edward Bertz, LaCrosse, will be master of ceremonies and the Rev. Charles Wolf, pastor of Ho;y Rosary Church, Limn, will deliver the sermon.
Father King was born on a farm near Edgar Dec. 10, 1906. Following graduation from St. John’s School at Edgar he began his studies for the priesthood at St. Lawrence College, Mt. Calvary.
There he completed high school and two years of college. He then entered the major seminary of St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn., where he was ordained a priest June 5, 1933, by the late Bishop Joseph Busch, in St. John’s Abbey Church, Collegeville, Minn. He offered his first Solemn Mass in St. John’s Church at Edgar on June 11, 1933.
His first appointment was to serve as assistant to the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. William Reding at SS. Peter and Paul Church at Wisconsin Rapids. Next, he was transferred to Sacred Heart Parish, Eau Claire, as assistant to the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. X. Orthen. In 1937 he was assigned to St. Patrick’s Parish at Mauston as assistant to the late Rev. George Scheicher.
In 1940 he was appointed administrator of St. Henry’s parish at Eau Galle, and remained there until 1950, when he was appointed pastor at St. Anthony’s in Loyal. A new convent, remodeling of the school, decorating the church and enclosing the church entranceway have been major parish improvements during his pastorate here.
In the mid-1940’s he was appointed state chaplain of the Knights of Wisconsin by Bishop John Treacy and served with Dr. C. W. Henney, state deputy, for two years. It was during his term as state chaplain that the Knights of Columbus adopted the policy of contributing funds to each diocese of the state for a worthy candidate studying for the priesthood. He was instrumental in promoting this program and seeing that it was adopted by the state council.
