Drews, Carl (26 JUN 1868 - 14 JUN 1941)

With the death of Carl Drews, Spencer has lost another pioneer resident.  Carl Frederick Drews was born in Germany, June 26, 1868, and died at his farm home in the town of Spencer, June 14, 1941.  He came to Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, with his parents when he was three years old.  Later they moved to East Waupun.  Here he met Miss Hattie Stoltenow of Spencer, who was employed in Waupun.  On Feb. 25, 1897, at Spencer, they were united in marriage.  They made their home on his mother’s farm near Waupun for about a year, and then moved to a farm which he had bought south and east of Spencer.  They were the first settlers in that neighborhood.  The brick for the house was hauled by wagon to the present intersection of County V and the 26 road and then taken to the farm on stone-boats.  Mr. Drews and his wife developed the farm, erected a set of fine buildings, and took an active part in community affairs.  He served his township as a member of the board of supervisors for several years, and town treasurer for about ten years.    He was also treasurer of the school district for several years.  All of his active years, with the exception of two and a half-years when he lived in Marshfield, were spent on his farm in the town of Spencer.  He took an active part in the development, of the school, good roads, and all progressive community work.

Mr. Drews was a life-long faithful member of the Lutheran church.  Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran church Wednesday, July 16, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. A. C. Staple officiating.  Burial was in the Spencer cemetery.

Mr. Drews is survived by his wife, two sons, Irvine and Harold of the town of Spencer, four sisters, Mrs. Adolph Toll, Miss Alvina Luebke, Miss Emma Luebke and Mrs. Henry Nimmer, all of Fond du lac and five grandchildren.
