On Friday, May 19, family, friends, faculty and fellow students at the School
District of Thorp gathered together and filled the Thorp High School gymnasium
to see the Class of 2023's commencement ceremony.
The proceedings began with seniors entering the [gymnasium to the playing of
"Pomp and I Circumstance" by the high school band. EricoJo Hallin gave the
opening remarks, welcoming all those |who came to see the Class of 2023 walk the
stage and graduate.
Mr. Adrian Foster recognized Rachel Boehlke, Taylor Boie, Delaine Mathison and
Payton Rhyner as this year's top ten percent. This was followed by a speech from
valedictorian Payton Rhyner, who spoke about the lifelong friends and memories
she has made during her time at Thorp High.
The Thorp High School Band then performed "Best Day of My Life" which included
seniors Samuel Thompson, Isabella Haas, Rachel Boehlke and Larissa Raether.
Salutatorian Delaine Mathison then gave her speech to the assembled crowd,
sharing memories and thanking all those who helped her get to this special day.
Band Arion and John Phillip Sousa Award recipients Rachel Boehlke and Isabella
Haas then performed an arrangement of Phil Collin's song "You'll Be In My
Heart." Mr. Adrian Foster then recognized this year's Gold Crest Award winners
Rebecca Abramczak and Rachel Boehlke.
The Thorp High School Choir then sang Jason Mraz's "Have It All" accompanied by
this year's Arion Choir and National School Choral Award recipients Payton
Rhyner and Delaine Mathison.
After the performance guest speakers Mrs. Jessica Ciolkosz and Mr. Sam Goettl
addressed the class and shared their words of wisdom and the impact the Class of
2023 has had on them. A video presentation highlighting the Class of 2023
followed.
Upon the completion of the video presentation the Class of 2023 received their
diplomas from Superintendent Mrs. Angela Hanlin and board' of education member
Amy Penterman. Mr. Adrian Foster then presented the Class of 2023, Thorp High's
newest alumni, to the audience.
The senior class then presented flowers to their families. This was followed by
a farewell address from Taylor Boie. The Class of 2023 then exited the gymnasium
to "I'll Always Remember You" by Hannah Montana.
Congratulations to Class of 2023 from all of us at The Thorp Courier. No matter
where life takes you, Thorp will always be a special place for you.

One of the School District of Thorp’s highest honors that is bestowed upon a
student is the Gold Crest. Each separate object and design of the crest
symbolizes a purpose or accomplishment at Thorp High School. Two members of the
Class of 2023 were awarded a Gold Crest: Rebecca Abramczak and Rachel Boehlke.

Schmidt, Sandra A. (15 Oct 1939 – 14 May 2023)
Sandra A. Schmidt, age 83, passed away at Evergreen Retirement Community on the
morning of Sunday, May 14, 2023. She was born to the late Ronald and Marian
(Barnhart) Daines on October 15, 1939 in Thorp, Wisconsin.
Sandra was married to Henry J. Schmidt on February 4, 1963.
Sandra graduation from Thorp High School, then graduated from St. Joseph’s
Hospital School of Nursing in Marshfield, Wisconsin on August 14, 1960, and
became a certified registered nurse in November of that year. Henry and Sandra
both practiced nursing for several decades.
Anyone who knew Sandra knew her to be a kind, compassionate, caring individual
of upstanding moral character. Sandra enjoyed reading, doll houses, following
the British royal family, and being a fashionable lady, whose hare was always
impeccable.
Sandra is survived by her nephew Joshua; nice Kristina, and her many friends.
Sandra is preceded in death by her mother, Marian; father Ronald; brother
Samuel, and husband Henry.
Per Sandra’s wishes a private burial of cremated remains will take place at
Allouez Catholic Cemetery in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
A special thank you goes to the wonderful hardworking nurses at DaVita who cared
for Sandra during her years receiving dialysis. Also, thank you to the excellent
professionals at Evergreen Retirement Community. Finally, thank you to attorney,
Jeanne Baivier and Sandra’s friend, Pauline Gauger.

Memorial Day Celebration (1979)

Memorial Day in Greenwood was another beautiful day of a parade, program, and
Memorial services at both cemeteries. The Greenwood American Legion was in
charge.
The program at the high school consisted of the following:
“To the Armed Forces” – Senior Band, Tennes Navrestad, director; presentation of
colors – Senior Band; Start Spangled Banner – Senior band; Invocation – John
Zepaltas; Memorial Day address – Steve Hemersbach; “God and Country” – Senior
Band; and Benediction – John Zepaltas; Retiring of the colors – American Legion.
Immediately following the program Memorial Day services were held at the
Greenwood Cemetery and St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The Greenwood High School held its 39th Alumni Banquet at the Greenwood gym on
Saturday, May 26, 1979, with 150 guests attending.
Acting as Master of Ceremonies was Gladys Drew Ackerman, who introduced Robert
Worden, and he in turn gave the invocation. The welcome was given by elementary
principal Charles Pouba. After the business meeting, conducted by Louis Landini,
was completed, entertainment was presented by Andy Scheuerman, who sang two
solos and a pian duet was rendered by Duane Decker and Susan Richmond. Carol
Turnquist gave recognition to the graduates of the class of 199, and also to
other classes who had members present.
“Outstanding Alumni Plaque” was presented to Harry Liebzeit by Dr. Wm. Olson.
Dr. Olson went down through the years with “Harry” and gave a warm documentary
on Harry and his many talents.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hansen, 212 West Street, Loyal, Wisconsin were married June
26, 1929 at St. Luke’s English Lutheran Church, Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Glenn Hansen and Marie Sayles from Waukesha were their attendants. Glenn Hansen
is now deceased. Marie Sayles will be present.
Lloyd Hansen was born May 3, 1907 to Mr. and Mrs. James Hansen, Superior, and
attended the Peter Cooper School in Superior. His wife, the former Esther
Guenther, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Guenther, was born January 17, 1910 in
the Town of McMillan, Marshfield. She attended the Wescott School, Town of Eau
Pleine, Stratford.
Lloyd, who health is good, lists hobbies of hunting and fishing and gardening.
He is a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Senior Citizens, Loyal.
Mrs. Hansen is in good health and life flowers, gardening and crocheting, and
also belongs to the Senior Citizens, Beaver Center Homemakers Club and the
Trinity Lutheran Church, Loyal.
The Hansen’s have lived in Loyal since 1954, operated the Gable Hardware Store
and started the Loyal Skogmo Store, which is now the Sportswear Express.
Retired in 1970, they have three children; one son, Kenneth James Hansen,
Minocqua; two daughters, Mrs. (Donna) Herbert Langfeldt, Loyal, and Mrs. (Susan)
Bill Loos, Woodruff; and nine grandchildren.
They will have an anniversary dance at the American Legion Hall in Loyal on June
9 from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
All friends, neighbors and relatives are invited. No invitations are being sent.

Forty students from Mid-State Technical Institute’s Sevens Point campus
graduated during the school’s 1979 commencement at Stevens Point Area Senior
High on Wednesday, May 20, 1979.
Among those forty students was Barbara Zvolena, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Zvolena, Route 2, Loyal, who earned a one year vocational diploma in the Clerk
Typist program.

Kevin Steiner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Steiner of Granton, graduated with
honor on May 27, 1979 at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. He received a
Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural education. This next year he will
teach at Fridley, Minnesota, a suburb of St. Paul.
At the University’s award banquet held this past week, Kevin was named (MVP)
most valuable player on the University’s baseball team. He played center field
on the team for four years.

Connie Winter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Winter, Route 1, Granton, is
among more than 115 winners of Stout Foundation scholarships announced by Jack
Wile, Executive Director of the Foundation.
Miss Winter, a freshman majoring in home economics education, was awarded the
$150 Mae E. Lampert Scholarship from the Foundation.
Wile said the winners were selected by a committee, which was composed of
students and faculty members, who reviewed more than 400 applications submitted
earlier this year by Stout students.

St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal, was the setting for the 1:30 p.m. wedding
of Patricia L. Martens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Martens, Route 1,
Loyal, and Larry A. Nickel, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Nickel, Route 1, Chili.
Rev. Chester Osowski officiated over the wedding, with Sharon Schoonover and
Gary Gluch sing, and Ronald Gluch played the organ.
The bride, who was escorted to the altar by her father, was seen in a floor
length bridal gown of white lace with a fingertip length veil. The dress was
made totally of lace with three ruffles of layered lace. Her veil, which was
fingertip, had a Camelot headpiece trimmed with lace and seed pearls. She
carried a flower cascade bouquet of bride’s pink roses, with pink miniature
carnations, statice and baby’s breath.
Attending the bride as maid of honor was Linda Martens, Milwaukee. Bridesmaids
were Debbie Nickel, Chili, Kathy Martens, Loyal, and Marsha Martens, Unity. The
maid of honor wore a floor length green floral chiffon dress with an accordion
skirt and a halter top with a short tie jacket. The bridesmaid’s dresses were of
the same style, only blue floral in color. They wore baby’s breath in their hair
and carried colonial bouquets of blue and white carnations with daisies and
baby’s breath with showers of light blue ribbons.
Serving as best man was Mark Nickel, Chili. Groomsmen were Dale Kuehn,
Neillsville, Rick Dix, Chili and Bill Martens, Unity.
Performing ushering duties were Wayne Bennett and Dale Nickel.
Susan Nickel and Lori Bennett took care of the guest book.
Wedding day events included a reception held at the American Legion Hall, a
dinner at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church basement, and a reception dance also
held at the American Legion Hall, Loyal.
The new Mrs. Nickel is a 1978 graduate of Loyal High School and is a saving
teller at Citizens National Bank and Trust, Marshfield. Mr. Nickel is a 1977
graduate of Granton High School. He is employed with Kluz and Elmer Masonry
Contractor, Wausau, Wisconsin.
After a wedding trip to an undisclosed destination, the couple will make their
home in Marshfield.

Six hundred sixty-eight graduates of Wester Wisconsin Technical Institute will
receive their diplomas in commencement exercises to be held at 8 p.m. Thursday,
May 31, 1979 in the Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium.
The associate degree will be awarded to 432 graduate who successfully complete
two-year technical programs; diplomas are to be presented to 236 students who
have completed one and two year vocational programs.
Also, 42 persons will receive certificates in the Pre-Service Nursing Assistant
program, having recently completed the 12-week program.
Candidates for 1979 spring graduation from this area are Marie Brandenberg,
Loyal, in medical assistant; Caroline L. Martin, Loyal, in secretarial science;
and Laurie Plautz, Greenwood, in secretarial science – legal.
