Davis, Damon R. (7 August 1827 - 13 December 1911)

Damon R. Davis died at the home of his son Ira, at Greenwood, Wis., Dec. 13, at the age of 89 years 4 months and 6 days.

Mr. Davis was one of the early settlers of Clark County, having come to Wisconsin when this section of the country was a dense forest, and there were no roads, and no travel; there was an abundance of wild game, and he became a skilled huntsman, and has laid low many a bear, wolf, and deer.  Mr. Davis was born at Crown Point, Essex County, New York, August 7, 1827, and was a son of Daniel R. and Maria (Glidden) Davis.  He was the oldest child, and was reared in St. Lawrence County, N. Y.  In 1848 he went to Green County, Ill., and spent four years in that and adjoining counties, working at whatever presented itself; at the end of this time he returned to New York, and remained there until 1865, when he came to Clark County as before stated.  He purchased 160 acres of land, and gave most of his time and attention to agricultural pursuits, although he was master at the carpenter’s trade.

Mr. Davis was married, March 5, 1848, to Miss Azuba Bryant, a native of Essex County, N. Y.  She died in Grundy County, Ill., Sept. 2, 1852, leaving two children: Hudson V. and Benjamin R.  On July 15, 1855, Mr. Davis was again united in marriage to Miss Polly Chase, who was born in St. Lawrence Co., N. Y.   She preceded him in death several years ago.  He leaves to mourn his loss, five sons and one daughter: Ira of Greenwood, Wis., Emroy and Warner of Three Pines, Oregon, Rice of Arpin, Wis., and Hudson of Waseca, Minn., and Mrs. Wm. Glidden of Oshkosh, Wis.  He was the oldest of 14 children, only 5 brothers and 1 sister surviving. The living brothers are: Sidney R., Bushrod, Whiston, Theodore and Solon, and Mrs. Huldah Sayles of New York.
