Winkler, Helmuth Ervin Horst (01 AUG 1914 - 29 JAN 1999)
Henry Winkler, age 84, of Granton, Wis., died Friday, January 29, 1999 at St. Joseph’s Hospice Care Unit in Marshfield, Wis.
Helmuth Ervin Horst Winkler was born on Aug. 1, 1914 in Erkener, near Berlin, Germany, the son of Max and Ida (Schucker) Winkler. He attended school in Berlin until his family moved to the United States in 1926. They lived in Chicago, where Henry attended school and then began working at various jobs in the area. He was united in marriage to Elsie Scharf on Oct. 19, 1935 in Granton by the Rev. John Booth. They continued living in Chicago and for the next ten years Henry worked at the Mars Candy Co. In 1946, they moved to Granton and began farming. And then in 1960, he became the custodian at the Granton School System. He worked there for seventeen years before retiring in 1977. Henry was a member of the Zion American Lutheran Church and had served on the Church board as Secretary, treasurer and deacon. His hobbies included traveling, yard work and gardening and he also enjoyed helping Elsie with her ceramics.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie, two sons: Fred (Laurie) Winkler and Bruce Winkler, all of Granton; and former daughter-in-law, Tena Winkler of Neillsville; five grandchildren: Susan (Todd) Lewis of Granton, Steven (Theresa) Winkler of Phillips, Wis., Kevin (Sarah) Winkler of Granton, Theresa (Tim) Josephson of Polaski, Wis., and Scott Winkler of Augusta, Wis. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
Funeral Services were held at 12:00 p.m., on Monday, Feb 1, 1999 at the Zion American Lutheran Church in Granton. Pastor Omar Nelson officiated. Music was provided by Marjorie Dahl, organist. Interment was in the Zion American Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation was from 11 to 12 p.m., Monday at the Church.
Casket bearers were his grandchildren, Tim Josephson, Todd Lewis, Kevin Winkler, Scott Winkler, Steve Winkler and his nephew, Greg Strassmann.
The Gesche Funeral Home is assisting Henry’s family with arrangements.
