Martyn, Edward W. (12 JUL 1936 - 8 APR 2012)

Edward W. Martyn, 75, Athens, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012, at Aspirus Hospice House, Wausau.

He was born July 12, 1936, at home in the Town of Frankfort during the hottest date on record for this area, son of the late Peter and Emma (Dallman) Martyn.

On December 8, 1962, he married Sandra Marth at Zion Lutheran Church, Marathon. She survives.

He was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving in the Korean War. He was a charter and lifetime member of the Edgar Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10187, serving in many positions including quartermaster, commander, and chaplain.

Ed worked for Marathon County Highway Department and plowed many snow storms, then owned a truck for Standard Oil Co., always having candy for the kids on his gas truck route. Needing a place to live in Edgar, he and his wife started the Brooklyn Mobile Home Park, and then purchased the Edgar Shoe Store selling and repairing shoes. He moved the family to a town of Johnson dairy farm, and finished his career driving semi-truck for WH Transportation, Wausau, and County Concrete, Marathon, using the handle of "Farmer".

In retirement he was an active member of the Edgar Steam & Gas Engine Show working with the sawmill. Ed loved woodworking and mechanics, helping many people learn these trades. If you needed help, he was the first to volunteer, especially in coordinating and supervising. He enjoyed driving his four-wheeler to the woods to sit and listen to nature and watch wildlife, looking for deer for the next hunt.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sandra, two children, Mark (Cathy) Martyn, Athens; Nancy (John) Kowalski, Wausau; daughter-in-law Mary Martyn, Abbotsford; grandchildren Rory Martyn, Oakdale, MN; Max Martyn, Abbotsford; Chelsea Martyn, Marshfield; Justin and Jordan Kowalski, Wausau; sister, Esther Schmirler, Wausau; brother, William (Judy) Martyn, Edgar; sister, Evelyn Christiansen, Escanaba, MI; sister-in-law Lorraine Martyn, Edgar.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Peter (1951) and Emma (1992); son, Michael (1997); brothers, Elmer (1996), Isaac (2001), and sister, Emily (1963); brothers-in-law, Roman Schmirler (1997); John Christiansen (2001); and in-laws, Geraldine (2010) and Milton (2010) Marth.

Ed's life will be celebrated during a visitation Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Peterson-Kraemer Funeral Home, Athens, from 4:00 - 8:00 pm and Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm. Reverend Andrew Alberts will officiate. Burial will take place at Peace Lutheran Church Cemetery, town of Frankfort.
