More Snow from day to day, though the temperature is up in comparison.

Ure Brothers had to lay off sawing longs.  The snow in the woods is so deep that horses can hardly get through the snow.

Mrs. John Duffy died Friday and was buried Tuesday.  She was formerly Mrs. Madler, mother of John, Peter and Joe Madler, Mrs. Walter Schmitz, Mrs. Chas. Schuster.  She has been ailing more or less during the last year of her life.

Carl Singer from Rockham, N.D. is visiting with his brother Wm. and his other relatives at present.

Mrs. Carl Mundt passed away Monday evening after a short sickness, having reached the ripe age of 78 ½ years.  The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at the M.E. Church here.  She was well esteemed by all who came in contact with her, and as she lived here with her husband for a good many years, the number of her friends is large and her departure is mourned by all.

There is much talk at present about patriotism, that sometimes some of our citizens would like to know in what way real patriotism will show itself.  Is it the man that blindly follows the crowd or the person that uses judgment and discernment in his course of action.  Is real patriotism tied down to a certain language or to a certain line of descendants?  Can a citizen be a patriot who happens to descend from French, Austrian, Italian or German ancestry?  Or has it got to be from our mother country as some of our people call it, though our mother has been pretty much of a step-mother according to history and recollection of some of our older citizens in the sense implied.  Is a real patriot the man that blindly rushes into danger, thereby making it possible to embroil our country with some foreign country, or the man that picks out a path that providence shows to lead clear and free of any possible trouble?  Of course we claim and ought to have the freedom of the seas, but in troubled times like the present, is it not more patriotic to avoid the danger spots?  Just as much as it would be unwise to go right into the midst of a howling fighting mob of big dogs, though I have the right to travel the highways.

The Ladies Aid will met next Thursday at Mrs. Clark Waterman’s.

Mrs. F. J. Baer and daughter Helen of Granton spent Saturday afternoon here.  Mrs. Baer was here in the interest of a pension client.

John Rollins and his sister Mrs. Amanda Williams were Chili shoppers Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Blakely were given a pleasant surprise party last Saturday evening by some 26 of their neighbors.

Grandma Dow had just the best ever Valentine party last week when 10 of her lady friends came in and had tea with her.

Mrs. C. Dow and children visited at E.A. Websters’ Sunday.

Our teachers, the Misses Furlong and Helbow were guests of Miss Lydia Neinas at Granton Saturday night.
