Mercedes Charlotte Borton,
86, of Eau Claire, WI, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Sacred
Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
Mercedes was born on January 16, 1926, in
Thorp, WI, to John and Helen (Schmidt) Maier. She graduated from Thorp high
School and attended Eau Claire Technical College for one year. After graduation
she went to Milwaukee to work for Benson Optical Company. She then came home to
Thorp to aid her family. She later continued her career in Eau Claire in the
optical business at Benson’s Optical. Mercedes would be best remembered as an
employee at Wally’s Swiss Chalet where she worked for over 30 years, until
retiring.
Mercedes married Donald Borton on November 23, 1946, at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Eau Claire. Together they raised six children. She
very much loved her children, grandchildren, the Green Bay Packers, and the many
friends she made.
Mercedes is survived by her children: Donna (James)
Chicone of Woodbury, MN, Kathy sterling (Richard) Birtzer of Minong, WI, Mick
Borton of Lake Hallie, WI, Sally (Larry) Lane of Fall Creek, WI, Donald (Lauri)
Borton of Eau Claire, and Patrick Borton of eau Claire; a sister, Marge
Sonnentag of Thorp; brothers: Norman (Mary) Maier of Madison, WI, John Maier of
Milwaukee, and Kenneth (Peg) Maier of Green Bay, WI; 13 grandchildren and 17
great -grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband Donald; brothers: Leonard, Gerald, Edmund; son-in-law, Albert Sterling;
and daughter-in-law, Cathy Conrow-Borton.
The funeral service for
Mercedes was held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2012, at Smith Funeral
Chapel, Eau Claire. Visitation was from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
A burial service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 15, 2012; at
Sacred heart Cemetery, Eau Claire.
