Abrahamson, Dorothy (16 November 1899 – 22 January 1985)
Dorothy Abrahamson, 85, of the Fairchild Nursing Home passed away Tuesday
evening, January 22, a Neillsville Memorial Hospital.
Dorothy Abrahamson, daughter of Frank and Magdalene (Dahlke) Matysik was born
November 16, 1899, in the Town of Cleveland, Jackson County. She was united in
marriage to Ray Abrahamson on July 1, 1919, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in
Fairview. The coup[e lived all their married life in Fairchild. Since October
25, 1983, Dorothy had been a resident of the Fairchild Nursing Home.
She had been a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Fairchild and a member of
their Altar Society. She was a member of the Fairchild American Legion Auxiliary
and of the Royal Neighbors. She was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters
and by her husband.
She is survived by seven sons, Leonard of Humbird, Edwin, Charles and Lyle, all
of Fairchild, Gerald of St. Paul, Alvin of Mauston and Bernard of River Falls;
two daughters, Carol Anason of Neillsville and Susan Janke of Union Grove; 23
grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 25, at St. John’s Catholic Church in
Fairchild with Father Cassidy officiating. Burial was in the Fairchild Cemetery.
The Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta was in charge of arrangements.

Ensor, Maude L. (5 February 1893 – 22 January 1985)
Maude L. Ensor, a Neillsville area resident for the past six years, died in
Neillsville Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, January 22. She was 91.
The deceased was born on February 5, 1893, in Brodhead to George and Dana
(Gillette) St. John. After her education, she married James Ensor in June 27,
1910, Rockford, Illinois, ceremonies. The couple farmed in that area for a few
years and then moved to Milwaukee where they resided for several years. Then
they moved to Brodhead where they farmed for many years until the 1948 death of
Mr. Ensor. In 1978, Mrs. Ensor moved to the Neillsville area to reside with her
daughter.
Surviving her are two daughters, Grace Haines of Neillsville and Edith Dahnke of
Oak Creek; a son, Robert, Milwaukee; a brother, Victor St. John, Neillsville;
six grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by two sons, Leroy and Herbert; a sister, Jessie; and four
brothers, Frank, Myron, Eddie and Jesse.
Funeral services were held on Saturday early afternoon, January 26, in Brodhead.
The body also was in state at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville for one
evening. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery at Brodhead.

Hartung, Harry P. (28 October 1901 – 28 January 1985)
Henry P. Hartung, 83, a former Neillsville area resident, died on Monday,
January 28, at the Clark County Health Care Center at Owen. He had been a
resident of the center since 1967.
The deceased was born on October 28, 1901, in Dickeyville to John and Margaret
(Wiederhold) Hartung. At the age of three months, he moved with his parents to
the Town of Pine Valley. He received his education at the rural Hiawatha School
and at St. Mary’s Parochial School in Neillsville. He then farmed in the Town of
Pine Valley for many years until moving into the city of Neillsville in 1964. In
1967, he became a resident of the county’s care center at Owen. He was a member
of St. Mary’s parish in Neillsville.
Surviving him are two sisters, Mrs. Anton (Rosalie) Richler of Neillsville and
Helen a Hartung of Chicago; and three brothers, Anthony of Neillsville, Clarence
of Carson City, Nevada, and Arthur of St. Louis, Missouri. He was preceded in
death by five brothers, John, George, Joseph, Frank and Albert; and a sister
Elizabeth.
Funeral services were to be held today, (Thursday, January 31) at 10:30 a.m.
from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville with the Rev. Joseph Henseler
officiating. Cindy Penker and St. Mary’s Choir were to offer service music.
Burial was to be made in the parish cemetery; pallbearers were Norman Lynch,
Pete McCammant, Hilbert Naedler, Ed Rychnovsky, Ed Hainz and George Pagenkopf.
(The body was to lie in state on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and
again on Thursday morning until 10 a.m. at the Gesche Funeral Home. In
Neillsville.)

Johnson, Milton and Evelyn (?? - 6 and 5 January 1985)
A double funeral service was held on January 9 in Bozeman, Montana, for Milton
and Evelyn Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson was one of the Sunshine Girls, a duo of her and her sister who sang
on the radio from Eau Claire in the 1940s.
Evelyn (Poler) Johnson, 68, died on Saturday, January 5, in a Bozeman nursing
home. Her husband Milton, 71, died Sunday, January 6, in a Bozeman hospital
after suffering a heart attack.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Hastings, Minnesota, to Ollie and Martha (Belter)
Poler. She was reared in rural Wisconsin and later lived in Watertown and
Neillsville before moving to Eau Claire. She married Milton Johnson on October
14, 1939. The couple moved to Montana in 1966.
Milton Johnson was born and reared in Strum. He was a carpenter. From 1949
through 1966, he was a partner in the Market and Johnson Construction Company of
Eau Claire. He later owned and operated a construction firm in Bozeman. He
retired in 1982.
Surviving the couple are two sons, Ray and Ron, both of Bozeman; two daughters,
Marilyn Baartz of Rice Lake and Joyce Danielson of Minneapolis; and nine
grandchildren. Milton also leaves a brother, Hiram, and a sister, Bernice Lee,
both of Strum. Evelyn also leaves her father, Ollie Poler of Neillsville
Memorial Home; three sisters, Myrtle Sletten of Eau Claire, Elaine Hume of
Bozeman and Betty Harder of Watertown; and a brother, Lloyd Poler, Granton.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Robert and Edward; and her mother in
1930.

Smith, Orval (6 October 1921 – 8 January 1985)
Orval G. Smith, 63, of Humbird passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 8, while
stacking wood on his property just east of Humbird.
The deceased was the son of Wray and Emma (Dehmlow) Smith and was born October
6, 1921, in Mauston. He married Delores Kaufman on February 10, 1945, at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fairview. The couple farmed for 12 years in the Town
of Cleveland, Jackson County, before purchasing the Hotel Bar in Humbird which
they have operated for 27 years. Orval had been the Humbird Chief for 23 years.
He is survived by his wife, Delores of Humbird; a daughter, Lorene Noyes, Eau
Claire; two brothers, Kenneth and William, both of Monroe; three sisters,
Lorraine Nemit of Trempealeau, Shirley Billerbeck of Osseo and Millie Byrns off
Merrillan; and by two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and
a sister, Iola Printz.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 11, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
in Fairview with Father Cassidy officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Sternitzky, Carl H. (13 January 1896 – 24 January 1985)
Carl H. Sternitzky, 89, of 409 West Fourth St., Neillsville, died in Neillsville
Memorial Home on Thursday morning, January 24.
The deceased was born on January 13, 1896, in the Town of Lynn to Albert and
Louise (Garbisch) Sternitzky. He attended parochial school in Granton and then
farmed in the Town of Lynn. He also sold insurance. In 1962, he moved into
Neillsville.
Sternitzky was married twice. He first was married on May 14, 1924, to Blanche
Wittke; a divorce later took place. On May 12, 1962, he married Elizabeth
Buchsteiner.
Surviving him, besides his wife, are three sons, Duane of Neillsville, Douglas
of Nekoosa and Donald of Granton; three daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Arlene) Kalbes of
West Allis, Mrs. Henry (Shirley) Kuester of Waukesha and Mrs. Darryl (Patty)
Farnsworth of Marshfield; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Thomas (Lorraine) Flynn of
Neillsville and Mrs. Jack (Milda) Driscoll of Milwaukee; a stepson, William
Buchsteiner, Milwaukee; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by five brothers and two grandsons.
Funeral se3rvcies were held Saturday afternoon, January 26, from St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville with the Rev. Richard Weber
officiating. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery; the Gilbertson
Funeral Home of Granton was in charge of arrangements. Grandsons were
pallbearers; music at the service was offered by Janice Mayer and Sharon Nemitz.

Tesmer, Helen (22 May 1896 - 23 January 1985)
Helen Tesmer, 88, died in Neillsville Memorial Home on Wednesday, January 23.
She had been a resident of the Home for the past 2 1/2 years.
The deceased was born on May 22, 1896, in Curtiss to Otto and Frieda (Weber)
Nagel. She received her education in Curtiss schools and on July 31, 1917, she
married Herman L. Tesmer in Colby ceremonies. The couple resided in the Colby
area until 1932 when they moved to the Town of Weston. In 1950, they moved into
Neillsville. She was a member of St. John’s Congregation.
Surviving her are four sons, Robert and Eldred, both of Phillips, Raymond of
Humbird and Milford of Neillsville; a sister, Emma Winkel, Marshfield; two
brothers, Alfred Nagel of Land O’Lakes and Arthur Nagel of Colby; 15
grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband (March 28, 1984); two brothers August
and Udo; a sister, Esther; and a daughter in infancy.
Funeral services were held on Saturday morning, January 26, from St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville with the Rev. Richard Weber
officiating. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements; burial was
made in Colby Memorial Cemetery.

Urlaub, Mary J. (17 October 1918 – 22 January 1985)
Mary J. Urlaub, a retired teacher who last made her home in Neillsville, died on
Tuesday afternoon, January 22, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Mrs.
Urlaub, who resided at 307 West St., Neillsville, was 66. She succumbed to
cancer after a long illness.
A memorial service was held on Friday afternoon, January 25, from the
Neillsville United Church of Christ with the Rev. Mark Voll officiating.
Organist was Eileen Zank. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
The body was to be cremated.
The deceased was born in Robinsdale, Minnesota, to William and Ella (Hansen)
Mueller on October 17, 1918. She received her education through high school in
Minnesota schools and then attended Mrs. Woods’ Academy in Minneapolis. She then
moved to Neillsville where she taught school for several years.
On August 12, 1943, she married Joseph Urlaub in Robbinsdale ceremonies. In
1956, the couple moved to California where she taught in the San Bernardino City
Schools for 20 years. After retiring, they returned to Neillsville in 1981. She
was a member of the United Church of Christ.
Surviving her, besides her husband and mother, is a son, Joe, San Diego,
California; and four daughters, Mrs. Bob (Billie) Gannon of San Bernardino, Mrs.
Jim (Darlene) Kincaid of Perris, California, Mrs. Pat (Judy) McCarty of Overland
Park, Kansas, and Elizabeth Urlaub of San Diego. Joining them is a brother,
John, Robbinsdale; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
father and a brother, William.

Van Dreser, Louisa (17 April 1893 - ? January 1985)
Mrs. Louisa Van Dreser, 91, recently died in a Stevens Point area nursing home,
where she had been a resident for the past 18 months. Two funeral services were
held; one in Stevens Point and the other at the United Methodist Church in
Hallie.
The deceased was born April 17, 1893, in Eau Claire to Mr. and Mrs. Louis
Nelson. She attended Eau Claire schools. In January of 1918, she married Jerome
Van Dreser in Eau Claire ceremonies and farmed in the Hallie area until he died
in 1952. She then lived in the Neillsville area before moving to Stevens Point
about five years ago.
She was a member of the Hallie UMC congregation and circles in that church as
well as the Neillsville and Stevens Point United Methodist Churches.
Surviving her are two sons, Roy of Stevens Point and Rober of Lombard, Illinois;
six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a
daughter, Mrs. Owen (Nancy) Haigh of Neillsville, and a brother and a sister.

Wetzel, Carl (29 April 1886 – 9 January 1985)
Carl Wetzel, 98, died Wednesday, January 9, at the Marshfield Convalescent
Center.
He was born April 29, 1886, in Lowell, Dodge County, the son of Carl and Bertha
(Ferarr) Wetzel. He farmed in Dodge County until his marriage to Enanda
Behringer on May 9, 1920, in Greenwood.
After the marriage, they farmed in the Town of Warner, retiring in 1959. His
wife died that year and he moved to Loyal. For the past 15 years, he was a
resident of the Greenwood Home for the Aged.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Wilfred (Aurelia) Atcherson, Unity; four
granddaughters, and four great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by his wife
and a son, Carl, Jr.
Services were held from the Grace United Methodist Church in Greenwood. The Rev.
Norbert Miller officiated. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.
