The Clark County, Republican reports the death of J. C. Benedict, of the Clark County, Journal. He died, after, a brief illness, at Neillsville, on Saturday January 1st, of typhoid fever, aged about 28 years. Mr. Benedict learned the printers trade in the Jackson County Banner office. He had been connected with the Journal office as foreman and editor for about three years.

*Note: The Clark County Journal, the third paper in Clark County, started in Neillsville, Jan. 31, 1867, by John S. Dore, formerly of the Union Flag. Dore published the paper, acting as one of the editors, with Edward E. Merritt as his associate editor. There was a warm rivalry between the Advocate and the Journal, and soon afterward the Advocate was discontinued. Merritt severed his connection with the Journal and moved to St. Louis, being succeeded by Joseph Benedict, a brilliant writer.

The election of 1868 was a triumph of the Republican party and the new paper began to dwell in the green pastures that had previously been occupied by its rival, though the editorial control of the latter was held by Joseph Benedict a brilliant writer who died in 1870, leaving Dore the publication and editorship of the Journal. . The Journal labored hard to sustain itself; Hand returned to the editorship of the Republican and the two papers were soon involved in a quarrel which was only abandoned when Hand resigned at the suggestion of the Republican's friends a short time prior to the election. The result of that event precipitated the suspension of the Journal, and the Republican grew fat in the sunshine of official favor and local patronage, (becoming the property of C. J. Cooper, with D. T. Lindley, editor, in March, 1873,) until June, 1873, when the County Press was started by H. J. Hoffman in the cause of Reform. These two papers continued to dwell together unawed by each other until April 1876, when Hoffman purchased the Republican and began the publication of the Republican Press which he still conducts, his brother, E. L. Hoffman, officiating as associate editor.

With feelings of sorrow and pain we announce the sudden death of J. C. Benedict, who has been noting editor of the Clark County Journal, at Neillsville, for the past two years, on Saturday of last week--the first day of 1870.  He died of typhoid fever after an illness of only ten days and his sufferings were intense.  His funeral took place in the town of Alma (likely Alma Center, Jackson Co., Wis.), in this county, and was attended by a large concourse of mourning friends.

We have known Mr. Benedict for the last ten years and in fact, initiated him into the mysteries of the "art preservative," and knew him intimately, and can truly say that he was a young man it was an honor to love and respect.  He will be sadly missed by many friends in this vicinity, and his parents are sorely afflicted in his death, but they have the sympathy of the whole community.  For a young man of his age--about 24--he gave promise of a genial and brilliant writer, and if he had lived a few years longer, would have made his mark in the newspaper world.  Only about ten days before his death, we had a conversation with him in regard to his business in the future, and learned from him that it was his intention to establish a paper of his own in some part of this State, next summer.  But, alias! his calculations have been frustrated by the hand of death.  It is indeed sad that one so young and full of of promise and usefulness should thus be cut down by the destroyer as he was about to reap a rich reward for his past labor and energy.  But such is the uncertainty of life.  We mourn for him as for a son of our own, and hope he has gone where his talents will be appreciated.  May he ever rest in peace and quiet, is the wish of the writer of this sad intelligence.
