Mattes, Elmira Mildred (26 January 1919 - 30 October 2012)
Elmira M. Mattes, 93, of Thorp passed away at Our Lady of Victory Hospital, in
Stanley, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012.
Elmira Mildred Kuester was born Jan. 26, 1919, in the Town of Warner, Clark
County, the daughter of Fred W. and Alvina (Brandt) Kuester. She was confirmed
at Immanuel United Church of Christ; she was raised on the family farm and
received her education in the Town of Warner, rural Greenwood. Elmira was united
in marriage to Philip C. Mattes April 27, 1918, at Immanuel United Church of
Christ. They move to Thorp, where they owned and operated Mattes Livestock Sale
barn. She ran the restaurant at the Sale Barn every Monday for many years and
also cooked for hundreds of people at the annual horse sales every year. She was
known for her homemade pies, which were loved by everyone. Her home was open to
all, and many relatives spent their summers visiting Thorp. After retiring,
Elmira loved to spend time traveling. Her husband, Phillip, died Aug. 13, 1982.
She is survived by two children, Philip O. (Diane) Mattes of Thorp and Jean
(Daniel) Winger of Cadott; eight grandchildren, Michele (Richard) Price, Laura
(Tom) Schleicher, Marsha Mattes, Michelle Mattes, Paul Winger, Mark Mattes,
Martin Mattes and Michael Mattes; three great-grandchildren, Victoria (Jeff)
Flashinski, Alexandra Price and Nathan Price; one great-great-granddaughter,
Azalea Price; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 2, 2012, at St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in Thorp. Rev. Paul Bittner officiated and burial of
cremains followed in Sylvan Cemetery in the Town of Reseburg. Visitation was
held at the church on Friday, from 10 a.m. until time of service.
