The Thorp Area Historical Society hosted the Clark County Historical Society’s
fall business meeting Saturday, Nov. 3, at Cindy’s Hall in Thorp.
Guest speakers Jeff and Maxine Kluckhohn presented information about their Omaha
Hotel renovation project. This old building, also known as the Hotel Paulus, is
located on the northeast corner of 7th and Clay Streets in Neillsville. Due to
20 or more years of disuse, restoring this building to use for shops or
apartments will require a lot of time and money, but they have already begun the
process of registering it on the Historic Register.
Sheila Nyberg, Economic Development Corporation and Tourism Bureau executive
director, brought information about opportunities for promoting Clark County.
She spoke about the upcoming 160th anniversary of Clark County and the 140th
anniversary of the Clark County Fairgrounds, a project to photograph and record
the old barns of Clark County and possible sources of funds for various
projects.
The Colby/Rural Arts, Loyal, Thorp, Stanley and 1897 Clark County Jail Museum
groups reported on recent and upcoming events in their areas. Christine Kurz
reported on the planning for the 2013 essay contest sponsored by the Clark
County Historical Society.
Christ Patton was elected second vice president, and Shirley Anderson was
re-elected secretary. The other officers will continue in their positions until
the 2013 business meeting.
Following the information-packed meeting all adjourned to the Thorp Area
Historical Society Museum to view the well arranged and attractive exhibits,
including a large and unique telephone exhibit occupying an entire room.
