SIDNEY BROWN

Sidney Brown, one of the most prominent and respected citizen of this part of Clark County, died March 1, 1912. He was born in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., July 2, 1835. He grew to manhood and was married there Oct. 2, 1857 to Lydia Harlow. A few years later they came with their little family to Brown County, Wis. This was just at the outbreak of the Civil war, and Mr. Brown enlisted as a private in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry.

He served gallantly through the war and was mustered out at its close as Quarter Master Sergeant. On his return he took up the task of clearing a new farm near Wrightstown in Brown County, where he lived till 1876, when he moved with his family to Cloud County, Kansas, taking up a homestead and developing a farm there. In 1881 they moved to Clark Co. and settled on a new farm, two miles east of Christie post office. Later this place was sold and he moved to his farm at Christie, which was his home until he died. Feb. 11, 1890 he wife died and was buried in the Christie Cemetery. To them have been born six children. One little boy, Clarence, died before they left New York, the other are all living. They are Sarah Chase of Mulino, Ore., Alta Chase of Salem, Ore., Elmer and Albia Brown, both residing in Portland and Lillian Sischo in Salem. In 1896, Mr. Brown married Maria Simmons of Kaukauna, Wis., who survives him. Sidney Brown was a type of stron and forceful man, so many of whom have come from his native county and state to make their mark in the west and take a prominent part in its development. As camp foreman in the lumber woods, as a pioneer on the forest farm or western prairie, as a soldier in the field, as a leader in local political affairs, as a citizen and neighbor he helped to build the commonwealth, in the same manner that his skilled hands helped frame many of the buildings around the county, strong and substantial. The funeral was held Sunday at Christie, Rev. Bastow of Greenwood officiating.
