Research Notes by Marsha Hosfeld.
The closest I came was Emily, wife of James in the 1880 Census. In 1895, James appears with only 1 other male in the household -- probably Harry -- so it does appear he is widowed. No marriage record, and no birth record for Harry. The WI records database does not have anyone even close to either name (Ellen or Emily) with a death record on that date. Which does not mean it did not happen ... just not recorded on that date.
There are also 1890 and 1895 Census records showing James as a Civil War veteran. At least I think it is the same fellow. Hard to tell. Barrett, Berret, Bennett… BUT, born "England" and age are clues that it is. There are other James Barretts around, and in multiple generations, but I see no obvious connection. It does not appear that he married again.
