JOS. BARTON DIES ON WAY HOME

This community was greatly shocked when the sad news became known that Sunday night about 11 o'clock as Joseph Barton was returning alone from attending Chautauqua, he had fallen dead on the sidewalk a few rods from his home. He was a man who usually retired early and if he was out at all in the evening, he got home promptly. When he did not arrive, his wife concluded that he had gone down to call on his nephews Francis and Jule Barton, who were here on a visit but as the hours went by and still he did not come, she started out to make a search, and was horrified to find him lying dead on the sidewalk, only a short distance south of the house. She roused the neighbors, who came to her assistance, but nothing could be done for the stricken man. He had evidently died instantly.

Joseph Barton was born in Canada in December, 1850, and was 73 years, 5 months and 29 days old at the time of his death. He grew to manhood in Canada, and was married there in 1874 to Zilda La Brant. About 46 years ago they came to Wisconsin and secured a place in the town of Grant, Clark County. After improving this considerably he sold it 28 years ago and bought a farm in the town of Weston, where he lived for about 15 years. About 13 years ago he built a fine home in Neillsville and move to the city. His first wife died 9 years ago and a year or more later he was married to Josephine Chainer, who survives him.

Mr. Barton was a man who had done faithfully and well his work in life. By honest labor he developed his farm and earned a livelihood for himself and family, and even in the evening of his life when he was enjoying a well-earned rest, he was always busy about his home and garden. He was an accommodating neighbor, a kind husband and father and a good citizen.

He leaves to mourn his death, besides his wife, 5 children by his first marriage: three sons, Albert, Arthur and Louie, all living on farms in the town of Weston two daughters, Mrs. Richard Welsh of Neillsville and Mrs. Wm. Shiller of Glendive, Montana. He leaves also 17 grandchildren, one brother, Anton Barton of Neillsville and one sister, Mrs. Marius Mourier of Otowa, Canada. The funeral will be held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The sister from Ottowa, and a sister of Mrs. Barton, Mrs. Louie Marion of Montreal, also the daughter, Mrs. Schiller from Glendive are all expected to be here for the funeral.
