Leona Bersell  (1913 - 2001)


Leona M. Bersell, 87, of 305 S. Chestnut Ave., died March 28, 2001, at Cedar Crest Health Center in Janesville.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rev. Anthony J. Wolf, Rev. Peter Leketas, Rev. Jerome G. Gerum, Rev. Roman Kaiser, Rev. Thomas Abraham and Rev. Dick Inglett will officiate. Helen Brinkmann will be the organist for William A. Allen, John F. Binder and James W. Eckes, vocalists.


Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Todd Bersell, Steven Bersell, Russell Crowe, Greg Stegge, Rob Rosen, Donald Schnitzler, James Herkert and Kenneth Koch.


Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Rembs/Kundinger Chapel where a combined Sacred Heart Parish and Sacred Heart Parish Council of Catholic Women Rosary Service will be held at 4 p.m.


Friends may also call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church in Janesville where a memorial Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m with Rev. Dale Halverson, Rev. Richard Inglett and Father Del Klink officiating.


In lieu of flowers, Leona's family would appreciate memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Marshfield, Faith Lutheran Church in Janesville or to Hospice Care, Inc.


Leona was born July 22, 1913, in Danvers, Minn., the daughter of Charles and Mary (nee Mathiesen) Schnitzler and was a graduate of Sacred Heart Parochial School and Marshfield High School. Leona married Donald H. Bersell on Aug. 1, 1937, in Marshfield and he preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1979. She was a postal worker for the Chili Post, Clark County, WI Office.


She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Christian Mothers, Chili Senior Center and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.


Leona is survived by her son, Gary (Audrey) Bersell of Janesville, six grandchildren, Sara (Russell) Crowe and Todd Bersell, both of Janesville, Steven (Michelle) Bersell of Chicago, Tari (Greg) Stegge of Eau Claire, Stephanie (Brian Kaye) Bersell of Madison and Amy (Rob) Rosen of Janesville seven great-grandchildren, Brittany, Travis and Tyler Crowe, Thomas, Matthew and Rachel Stegge and Brandon Rosen sister, Laura Hoerres of Milwaukee sister-in-law, Eleanor Schnitzler of Marshfield numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.


She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Adela Herkert and a brother, Roman Schnitzler.


The family would like to thank the staff of Cedar Crest Health Center, especially Alice Johnson, Mary Boese, Donna Boyd, Laurie Watrous, Terry Singleton and the CNAs on C Wing. Also a special thank you to Judy Garfield, a wonderful, caring nurse in the Radiation Oncology department at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Thank you to Reverends Dave Halverson, Richard Inglett, Glenn Skatrud and Father Del Klink as well as Marilyn and Ellen at HospiceCare Inc. and Sara and Stephanie for the extra TLC you gave to Grandma.


Grandma fought a courageous battle for seven months and won the battle on March 28, 2001. Love you, Mother, Grandma, Nanny B. We will miss you.
