Scheller, Gerald E. (11 December 1931 – 30 November 1975)

High speed was a contributing factor in the highway death early Sunday evening of Gerald E. Scheller, 43, of Loyal, according to a report of Clark County Traffic officers.

Scheller, the eighth traffic victim in Clark County on highways this year, was traveling eastward at a curve in Highway 98, near Y. Snow was falling at the time, Officers Matt DelFatti and Mark Cattanach reported.

Black skid marks were found on the pavement of Highway 98, indicating that the vehicle’s brakes were locked, and Scheller apparently lost control. Two hundred feet beyond the beginning of the black skid marks, the car went into the south ditch and traveled 123 feet before striking, and breaking, a utility pole. It continued on 53 feet, where it struck a driveway culvert and apparently traveled through the air for another 57 feet before it struck the ground on the front bumper and overturned.

Scheller suffered a fractured neck and was pronounced dead on arrival at a Marshfield hospital, to which he was removed by ambulance.

Scheller married the former Dawn Hawley on November 24, 1973 and had been working as an insurance salesman for the last two years.

He was born December 11, 1931, in Milwaukee, and worked for American Van Lines and Dolly Madison for a number of years before coming to Loyal.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Jerry, Jeff and Jim, and a daughter, Tina, all of Billings, Mont.; three stepsons, Jim Schlagenhaft of Kenosha, Jim Schlagenhaft, at home, and Buddy Hansen, at home; three step-daughters, Karen Schlagenhaft of Wausau, Mrs. Jim (Cheryl) Sharp of Bowling Green, Oh., and Mrs. Tim (Barbara) Nysted of San Jose, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Melvin (Shirley) Bushberger of Wind Lake, Mrs. Audrey Friend of Appleton, and Mrs. Darrell (Dennett) Hageman of Wauwatosa; a brother, Donald of Wind lake; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Glor of Little Chute.

Funeral services were to be held Wednesday afternoon from Trinity Lutheran Church in Loyal, with the Rev. David E. Wenger, pastor of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Greenwood, in charge. Burial was to be made in the Loyal Cemetery.
