William Eggett (1872-1905)
The funeral for William Eggett, whose sad and untimely death was mentioned in these columns last week was held Friday afternoon at 1:30 from the M.E. church of this city, Rev. C. O. Presnall preaching the sermon. He died Oct. 14, 1905. It was one of the largest funeral held in Greenwood, Clark County for a long time, that church being crowded to overflowing, many not being able to gain admission. The body was laid to rest in the Greenwood cemetery.
William Eggett was born in Yorkshire, England, Jan. 18, 1872, where
he lived until he was ten years of age. Then he went with his
parents and family to Canada, where they remained one year, moving
from there to Clark county and settled on the home farm, where the
family still reside. June 10, 1896, he married Miss Nettie
Chandler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. "Woodey" Chandler, now of Cherry
Valley, Canada. To this union came five children, the youngest
being sixteen months of age. Besides his immediate family, deceased
leaves a father and mother, two brothers, George and Alfred and one
sister, Minnie. It will be remembered that another brother, John,
died some five or six years ago.
Mr. Eggett was a man of the best character, a conscientious
Christian citizen, faithful to his family, his kindred and his
church. He was a member of Shanks M. E. Church and was
superintendent of the Sunday school. His death coming as it did at
his age and situated as he was is peculiarly sad. His father, who
owns the farm which he and deceased have worked on halves for
several years, is in poor health and hardly is able to look after
the place, which is the support of the two families. Fortunately,
Mr. Eggett carried a $1000.00 policy in the Northwestern National
Life of Minneapolis. It was only a few days ago that he had refused
to take out an accident policy, little thinking at the time of
course that it would ever be of value to him or his family.
The Gleaner reflects the sentiments of all who know them, in
expressing the profoundest sympathy for the bereaved ones.
