Death of
Edwin H. GATES, Scion of Pioneer Family
Father was Daniel Gates, Prominent Business Man of
Neillsville
Edwin H. Gates, 88, a former resident of the town of Weston, died Wednesday afternoon, July 1, at the Marden nursing home in Greenwood, where he had been for several months. Death was attributed to old age complications.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 7, at 2 P.M. from the
Bergemann funeral home with Rev. William Koehler officiating.
Interment was in the Neillsville city cemetery.
Mr. Gates was born December 8, 1864, at Neillsville to Daniel and
Jane Hewett Gates. He was a resident of Clark County all of his
life. he lived for a number of years on the old Gates place, which
is now Joy Stanton's farm, south city limits, and later lived in
the town of Weston until 1950,when he went to stay at various
nursing homes. He worked in the old logging camps of the county
several winters. Mr. Gates was a great walker - walking to and from
town with a week's supply of groceries.
He was married to Mary Nichells on October 25, 1889, who died in
1896. He later married Mary Witz, who is also deceased.
He was the father of six children: Blanche, deceased; Daniel, last
known address, Hamilton, Mont.; Edwin H., somewhere in
Massachusetts; Mrs. Nellie Setlin, East End, Sask, Canada; Mrs.
Genevieve Ristau, also of East End and James in the Panama Canal
Zone.
Three brothers and two sisters are deceased.

My comment: errors in this obit:
Edwin, Jr. died in 1944 (he was my grandfather)
Mary Witz was Anna Jane Witz and she lived until 1965.
Nellie Setlin was Nellie Sethen.
If anyone is related to any of these people, I would love to
compare information.
