CHAS. HENRY HOMMEL
The following from the White Pigeon Journal (Michigan) will be of
interest to a large number of Gleaner readers: "Chas. Henry Hommel
was born in Long Island, NY, Dec. 2, 1853, and died in White
Pigeon, Mich., Jan. 8, 1903, being 49 yrs., 1 mo. and 6 days
old.
"He came west to Wisconsin when about 2 years old, and lived there
until about 25 years of age. He then went to Dakota where he lived
20 years after which he moved to this place where he has since
lived.
"He was married to Miss Elizabeth Poppe, March 27, 1882, at
Greenwood, Clark county, WI. Five children were gathered in the
home as the result of this union, all of whom with his wife survive
him, this being the first entrance of death into the family.
"He began to complain almost as soon as he came to White Pigeon,
but the peculiar affliction that carried him away did not appear
until about a year ago. He called to his help medical aid, and was
cared for by physicians of this village, Ann Arbor, Chicag, La
Grange, Indianapolis, and Elkhart. He underwent two surgical
operations for the removal of his difficulty, one in October last,
which was not successful in bringing him relief, and one last week,
from which he did not survive.
"He united with the M.E. church in this place about three years
ago, and has been a consistent member of the same ever since. He
was a member of the Aouw, his lodge being in Watertown, SD. He
leaves, besides his family, a mother, a sister, three brothers with
a large number of other relatives, an afflicted church and
sympathizing community to mourn the loss."
