Roberts, Gordon (24 September 1919 - 16 May 1976) With Flag
Funeral services were being held this week in Greenwood for three area residents
who were injured fatally in a collision between two cars on Highway 13, just
north of Marshfield, about 7 p.m. Sunday.
Double services were to be held today (Thursday) at 10:30 a.m. from the Rinka
Funeral Home for Gordon Roberts, 56, of Greenwood, and his step-son, Michael A.
Kotcon, 24, of Willard. Kotcon died in the Marshfield hospital about 10:30 p.m.
Sunday, two and one-half hours after the accident.
Still in critical condition with head injuries Tuesday morning was Mrs. Betty
Roberts, 42, wife of Roberts and mother of Kotcon. She also suffered head
injuries in the crash which saw the car driven by Mrs. Bolf broken into three
sections by the impact.
Marathon County authorities reported that the car driven by Mrs. Bolf went out
of control on the rain-slicked highway and skidded cross-wise of the pavement in
front of the Roberts car. They attributed the accident to the slick condition of
the highway surface and high speed. A motorist saw the Bolf car shortly before
the accident, the officers reported, and estimated the speed of the car at from
80 to 90 miles per hour.
Roberts who was instantly killed, was pinned inside his car until firemen from
Marshfield were able to cut his door open.
Roberts, his wife and step-son had left a Marshfield supper club but moments
before the accident. They had dined there with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thompson and
Mr. and Mrs. Arden Hinkelmann, of Neillsville, after attending an art showing of
Mrs. Thompson’s works in Marshfield.
They were traveling to Greenwood to attend a baccalaureate service for Greenwood
High School graduates that evening. Among the graduates is Lynn Ann Kotcon, a
daughter of Mrs. Roberts.
At the joint services, this morning at the Rinka Funeral Home, the Rev. David
Wenger of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, will conduct rites for Roberts. The Rev.
Michael Mertens, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church of Willard, will be in
charge of the rites for Kotcon. Burial for Roberts will be made in the Loyal
Cemetery; for Kotcon in the Holy Family Cemetery at Willard.
Roberts, who is widely known in the Loyal, Greenwood and Neillsville areas,
formerly owned and operated the K Corners Tavern north of Loyal, and at one time
also owned and operated the Loyal Bowling Alley.
He was born September 24, 1919, in Abertillery, South Wales, to Mr. and Mrs. B.E.
Roberts, who now live in St. Petersburg, Fl. He came w8ith his p0arents to
Canada, then moved to Michigan before coming to Wisconsin. He was educated in
Abertillery, Michigan and Canadian schools, and became a tool and die maker
while working in Ohio.
He was a naval veteran of World War II, serving from March 22, 1944 until
January 1, 1946. He was a member of the Loyal post of the American Legion, and
of the Marshfield Elks Club.
In June 1969, he was married to the former Betty Luzovec of Willard and has been
working at M&E Development Center for the last two years. He and Mrs. Roberts
were building a house in Neillsville.
Surviving beside his wife and parents are a daughter, Mrs. George (Karen)
Brenner, Jr., of Loyal; a son, Gordon Michael Roberts of Ridgewood, N.J.; two
step-daughters, Lynn and Roberta Kotcon, both at home; a sister, Mrs. Vern
(Audrey) Kennerly of Richmond Heights, Oh.; a brother, John T. Roberts of
Hudson, Fl.; and three grandsons, Steven, Dean and George Brenner of Loyal.
