Johnson, Albert G. ( 1921)
Owen lost another one of its most respected citizens Sunday evening, in the death of Albert G. Johnson, aged 53 years, which occurred at his home here. For more than a year and a half he had been in failing health and when his trouble first began, he sought medical treatment from physicians here and then later went to Rochester for the advice and treatment of specialists but in all there seemed to be no relief, and his life passed on at about 9:30 o'clock.
A.G. Johnson was one of the pioneer residents of the city, coming
here twenty-two years ago, when the city was yet unincorporated and
the country about here a wilderness. He accepted a position with
the John S. Owen Lbr. Co., at the time as a scaler and continued in
their employ until failing health required him to quit his work.
After being here two years he opened up an insurance agency and
land office and did much in this line of work up until about two
years ago when he disposed of his business. This work he attended
to after finishing his days work in the lumber years.
After being a resident of Owen about a years the District
Superintendent of Sunday Schools of the Congregational church came
to Owen, and Mr. Johnson with his aid started the first Sunday
School in Owen, holding the meetings in the school house. In later
years he also would go to neighboring towns and preach and help in
organizing churches and Sunday Schools. He was the Deacon of the
Congregational church when it was organized here and has been an
officer ever since. In starting the Sunday School he became
superintendent and held that office for about fifteen years. His
life work and social activities were at all times in the church and
his efforts are greatly responsible for its success and growth.
In the passing of Mr. Johnson, the church misses a good worker and
the town as well. He was a member of two fraternal societies, the
Yoeman and the Knights of Pythias, the later order attending the
services in a body and taking charge of the funeral services at the
grave. He leaves to mourn a wife and three children, two daughters,
Leona and Dorothy and one son, Jerome.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, a short prayer
being held at the home and services at the First Congregational
church of which he was the founder, at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. E. C.
Clark officiating. Burial taking place in the Riverside Cemetery.
The bereaved wife and children have the heartfelt sympathy of the
entire community at this hour in the loss of their husband and
father.
