EMMA JANE ELIZABETH MADDUX VARNEY.
Emma Jane Elizabeth Maddux, mother of the
late Mrs. Nettie Varney, was born in Marsailles, Ohio, Sept. 21,
1845, and died at Saxeville, Wis., August 27, 1927. In 1850 she
came by boat across lakes Erie and Michigan and by wagon to Ripon
where her people lived until 1853 when they moved to Weyauwega,
where she resided until May 14, 1865 when she was united in
marriage to Garrett VanAirsdale at Saxeville, Wis.
To this union were born six children: Frank, Nettie, Carrie, Belle,
George, Effie and Garfield. George and Effie died in infancy. Mrs.
Nettie Varney died Jan. 8, 1926, the rest were present to mourn the
loss of a loyal mother. Her husband departed this life Jan. 3,
1909. One grandson, Everett Varney, died in France. All the years
of her married life were spent on the home farm at Saxeville, Wis.,
except short intervals with her children.
The surviving are Frank of Saxeville, Belle of Marshfield, Garfield
of Berwyn, Ill., a son-in-law, Chas. Varney and daughters Irene and
Mrs. George Enfeldt and daughter, Margaret. There was a profusion
of beautiful flowers and a large concourse of relatives and
friends.
