Martha Sylvia Patten, 89, Owen, died on Wednesday, August 11, 1999 at 4:35 a.m. at the Clark County Healthy Care Center in Owen, where she had resided since 1977.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 14, 1999, 11:30
a.m., at the Maurina Funeral Home in Owen, with Reverend Paul
Petersen officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Withee.
Visitation was at the Maurina Funeral Home in Owen Saturday from
10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:30 a.m.
The former Martha Sylvia Nevala was born on May 24, 1910, in
Wakefield, Michigan, the daughter of Edwin and Emily (Maki) Nevala.
She came with her parents to farm in the Town of Longwood as a
small child where she attended the Lone Oak Grade School. As a
young girl, Martha moved to Stambaugh, Michigan, and was employed
in domestic work.
Martha and Webster Hodnett were united in marriage on February 1,
1933. They farmed in the Town of Longwood and later in the town of
Hixon. Webster died on July 2, 1951, and Martha remained on the
farm after his death. Martha married Willard Patten on February 1,
1956, and they farmed on her farm until she entered the Clark
County Health Care Center. Willard died on July 1, 1992. A home
maker, Martha enjoyed farm life, gardening and her family coming
for special occasions and visits.
She will be dearly missed by her family: one son Floyd (Evelyn)
Hodnett of Crystal, Minnesota one daughter Joyce Hodnett Ruggles of
Withee one brother Arthur Nevala of Greendale one sister Mary
Reinertson of Owen two step-sisters: Ann Novak and Elsa Domage of
Beltsville, Maryland 5 grandchildren: Michael and Ron Hodnett,
Debra Walker, David Bucky Ruggles and Patricia Bailey 7
great-grandchildren: Jeremy, Larissa and Kelsey Ruggles, Kris,
Nicolas and Dana Hodnett and Britani Walker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands: Webster Hodnett
and Willard Patten sisters: Signe Lithen and Aili Kartinen brother:
Toivo, Ray and Larry Nevala step-mother Anna Hero Nevala
step-sister Martha (Snyder) De Nobile and step-brothers: Selse and
Carl Hero.
