Obituary of Elias Peterson
Elias Peterson (Voddan) a pioneer resident of this city, quietly
passed away at his home on Main St. Sunday morning Feb 22 as the
bank clock was chiming the hour of four. Deceased was born near
Throndhjem, Norway, March 27, 1833. He was united in marriage to
Andrea Traumel. He came to America in 1870 and settled at
Neillsville, Wi., where he worked at his trade that of a shoemaker,
for one and one-half years.
He moved to Greenwood in 1872 where he worked at his trade a number
of years, later he was engaged in the mercantile business. He took
an active part in town and city affairs. He was a member of the
town board for two years and was city clerk about sixteen
years.
Six children Mrs. Ole Johnson, Mrs. S. B. Johnson, Mrs. Mary E.
Larson, P.E. Peterson, Mrs. John Dyre, Mrs. Wm. Hogue, survived
him. He also leaves twenty seven grandchildren, sixteen
great-grandchildren and two brothers.
Relatives from away who attended the funeral were Miss Olive Hanson
of Chicago, Mr and Mrs. A. Jensen and Mrs. John Charles of
Neillsville and Mrs. O. Dahlquist and son Carl of
Ashland.
After a long busy and useful life, he died, as he had
lived-honored, trusted and loved. His life was completed, if work
all done and well done constitutes completion. He lived a Christian
life and through all the vicissitudes and sorrows, that he met in
the way, his faith in God never wavered.
Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, Feb 24,
Rev. A. B. Dyre officiating.
The Odd Fellows, of which he had been a member since 1874,
conducted services at the grave.
