Joseph Poehnlein
(1910 - 2000)
Joseph John Poehnlein, 90, Neillsville, Clark
co., WI died Friday, March 10 at his home.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 13 at Gesche Funeral
Home in Neillsville, with Rev. Joseph Henseler of St. Mary's
Catholic Church officiating. Interment took place at St. Mary's
Catholic Cemetery.
Joseph Poehnlein was born on March 9, 1910 at the Town of Little
Black to the late John and Clara (Baumgarter) Poehnlein. After his
schooling, he worked at the Powder Plant in Baraboo.
His marriage to Gail Preston, who preceded him in death, took place
on February 2, 1943 at the Sacred Heart Church in Medford. They
lived in Wisconsin Dells and he continued working in Baraboo.
During WWII, he enlisted in the US Army. On June 6, 1944, he was at
Omaha Beach, France and fought in the D-Day battles. He was wounded
and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. When he returned
to the US, he worked at Berg Barn Equipment in Marshfield for two
years, and then at Nelson Industries where he worked for 27 years
before retiring in 1975. After retirement, he was active at the
Senior Citizens Center.
He is survived by three sons, David (Carol), Alma, Loren, Odessa,
Texas, and Bruce, Neillsville one sister, Clara Sauer, Marshfield
two granddaughters and special companion, Helen Tews,
Neillsville.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by
eight siblings.
