Poff, Dr. Charles M. ( 1902)
Dr. C. (Charles) M. Poff died at Black River Falls Oct. 23 1902. While on his way to Neillsville, he was taken with pneumonia snd heart trouble and died after a brief illness. He enlisted in the 13th Indiana, Vols. in June 1861, and was wounded at Rich Mountain, Jul 11, 1861.
He was married April 25, 1863 to Rachel C. Armstrong of Niles City,
Mich. In 1865 they came to Wisconsin residing in Monroe County,
Readstown, Viola. A few years ago he came to Clark County, and
bought land in Washburn (Twp.) where he began to open up a farm,
taking great interest in the work and gave it up because of failing
health, going to reside at LaCrosse. Early in life he became a
member of the Christian Church and was ordained a minister in 1875.
He however continued the practice of medicine which he began in
1866, following his profession, until age and failing health
compelled him to retire from active practice. He was a very
generous and spirited man, and won friends wherever he went. He was
a prominent Odd Fellow and Grand Army man and had a host of friends
in both orders. He leaves a wife and 3 children, two brothers and
four sisters. One sister Mrs. Thos. Pool resides on the farm in
Washburn. The funeral was held at the M. E. church in Readstown,
Wis., where the remains were laid at rest.
